EQ3 EtaCrown® – intelligent energy efficiency in drive technology

With the development of the EtaCrown® angle gearhead incorporating crown gearhead technology, ZEITLAUF® antriebstechnik has excelled in the field of energy saving gear motors. The improved efficiency rate of the two-stage version (85% on average, and more than 92% in the case of the single-stage version) means that this gearhead consumes less electrical energy than worm gears, for instance, to perform the same amount of work. This means up to 70% less loss of power or up to 3.5 times more efficiency. This is due to the angle gearhead gearwheels rolling off one another rather than sliding off, the energy lost to rolling friction being considerably less than that lost to sliding friction. This means that a markedly larger proportion of the power put in is available as power put out. The markedly improved efficiency rate makes it possible to use smaller motors as well as smaller electronics and switching power supply units with noticeably lower power requirements. This means that energy requirement in operation can be further reduced. Lower surface temperatures (40°C instead of 80 °C in the case of worm gears) mean that expensive shielding is a thing of the past. Symmetrical geometry keeps storage costs down and the omission of the flange / recesses provides yet more savings. And, apart from technical sophistication and outstanding features, the  drive concept also stands out for its economic efficiency. An above average service life rounds off the cost effective aspect both in terms of initial investment and running costs.

Angle gearheads versus worm gears
Take a specific example to prove the energy savings potential of EtaCrown®:
Nowadays, almost 70% of the power used by industry is consumed by electric motors. The savings potential is appropriately large. Increased usage of gearheads with improved efficiency rates will have an enormously positive effect on power consumption. Thus, for example, the power used on a conveyor equipped with 20 EtaCrown® drives is approximately 50 percent less than the same using standard worm gears. The electricity saved in a year would be enough to power 497 low-energy light bulbs (11 Watt) for 1,000 hours. In terms of life cycle costs, the actual cost advantage (no maintenance, smaller switching power supply units, energy savings etc.) set out in the example above is approximately 2,500 Euro per year.
