Zeitlauf Antriebstechnik

New generation of moulded-case circuit-breakers with spur gearheads from ZEITLAUF® antriebstechnik

Mechatronic complete solution comprising drive unit, operating unit, circuit board and manual control

A particularly intelligent solution for challenging drive tasks in circuit breaker technology is now provided by ZEITLAUF® antriebstechnik with the development of the efficient drive motor based on spur gearhead Gtg 96.4. This drive unites state-of-the-art drive technology and innovative electronics in modular moulded-case circuit-breakers – a mechatronic complete solution that meets the strict requirements of electrical power distribution systems as well as the requirements of remote maintenance / telecontrol.

Moulded-case circuit-breakers in detail
With an efficient gear motor unit based on the Gtg 96.4 spur gearhead, ZEITLAUF® antriebstechnik has now developed a mechatronic complete solution for Siemens. This is unusual in that ZEITLAUF® antriebstechnik supplies the complete unit, including the casing, gearhead mechanism and electronics, and not just the gearhead.

The universal and communication-capable Sentron 3VL moulded-case circuit-breaker from Siemens meets the needs of space-saving electrical power distribution units within a 16 A to 1,600 A power range. They are available depending on requirements for protecting systems and motors, for starter combinations or as circuit-breakers. The corresponding actuators can be thermal-magnetic (16 A to 630 A) or electronic (63 A to 1,600 A), as required.

With just two product families for internal accessories, a large choice is achieved at low expenditure when planning, installing and converting. The circuit breakers can be used for many applications. These include feed and branch circuit breakers in low-voltage switchgear, switching devices and protective devices for motors, transformers and capacitors. In addition, they are used for network equipment and for stopping and switching off in connection with connectable rotary drives and connection covers.

Drive solutions to meet the most challenging demands
The mechatronic drive unit (spur gearhead and permanent magnet motor combination) is a modular system and has been developed to suit a total of five different sizes of moulded-case circuit-breakers (type up to 1,600 Amperes). This means that one single design of drive unit can be used for all sizes – same gearhead, same shafts, same high-voltage motor, same electronics. The adapter casing for the circuit breaker is the only custom designed element. This was a major challenge to the engineering expertise of ZEITLAUF® antriebstechnik.

Today, strong mechanical tractive forces are not the only reason circuit breakers are driven by motors (the larger versions in particular). Modern systems are exclusively remote controlled and remote monitored. This particular design is unique to the market because, normally, a separate drive has to be developed and produced for each different size and voltage.

Differing size requirements, loads and tractive forces, plus evening out any arising tolerances, are factored into this intelligent drive unit from ZEITLAUF® antriebstechnik right at the outset. An additional advantage is evident when service is required, as it is not necessary to stock different drive units. In addition, a high degree of gearhead startup reliability is guaranteed.

Structure of the drive unit
The drive unit consists of a gearmotor and a display unit. The Gtg 96.4 5-stage spur gearhead from ZEITLAUF® antriebstechnik is the gearhead used, having a reduction of 290.4. The individual wheel stages are either sintered or injection moulded. The output stage includes a patented roller type freewheel developed by ZEITLAUF® antriebstechnik that makes manual operation possible. This gearhead concept stands out for its space-saving design and its high degree of cost efficiency.

Other advantages are shock resistance, high torque and easy installation. Along with the spur gearhead a permanent magnet motor is employed, produced in 24V, 54V, 110V and 230V versions. This is directly combined with a display unit that indicates the switch position of the drive. The switch positions are displayed on the front in colours red, green and yellow.

Specially developed electronics make it possible for the switch drive to be electrically operated independent of the type of current, AC/DC. The circuit board includes limit switches that indicate the individual drive switching positions (On and Off). Other microswitches are also included in the board for electronically recording the positions of the switching elements.

All in all, the performance characteristics of this mechatronic solution from ZEITLAUF® antriebstechnik add up to numerous advantages – from planning to installation to operation. In addition, the user benefits from the modular structure, the few components plus standard accessories making planning, installation and conversion easy. System monitoring and operation can be carried out entirely via Profibus DP and Modbus.
